Ancoats: Delivering Commercial Excellence

When David Wood founded Ancoats in 2020, he saw an opportunity to bring the experience of a large construction firm into a more agile, high-touch model. Based in Minneapolis, MN, Ancoats is a boutique provider of construction management and general contracting services, serving clients primarily throughout Minnesota and select surrounding markets. The firm works across many areas of the commercial space, including corporate, hospitality, and science and technology environments.

For Wood, the company’s name reflects that mindset. Ancoats is named after a district in Manchester, England, where generations of his family were born and raised. Historically known for its role in the Industrial Revolution, the area represented hard work, innovation, and resourcefulness—qualities Wood wanted to carry into the business.

Built Around Service and Connection

Ancoats operates across three core service areas—construction management, design-build, and general contracting—bringing integrated teams, single-point leadership, and an emphasis on simplicity, transparency, and professionalism to every project. Across each service, the company’s approach is rooted in relationships. Rather than focusing on one-off jobs, Ancoats builds long-term partnerships with clients, scaling alongside them as their needs evolve. “We’re not pursuing projects, we’re pursuing partnerships,” David says.

A Builder’s Perspective on Cambria

That relationship-first approach extends to the products and partners Ancoats trusts on its projects. David first started working with Cambria early in his career, and the brand continues to be included across Ancoats’ work today. “We choose Cambria because of the predictability around timelines and the coordination,” David says.

That reliability is especially valuable in complex commercial work, where teams are coordinating thousands of decisions, materials, and schedules at once. For Ancoats, Cambria’s durability, design range, and American-made production all contribute to its value on projects that demand both performance and precision.

Standout Project: SICK Campus

A defining example of Ancoats’ approach is its work with SICK, a global sensor manufacturing company with a campus in Bloomington, MN. After completing Phase 1 in 2022, a manufacturing and office building, Ancoats continued the relationship with Phase 2: a new 140,000-square-foot office building and parking garage connected to the first by a skyway.

The project was designed in a post-COVID workplace landscape, when companies were rethinking what an office could—and should—offer. For SICK, the goal was to create a building that would bring people together with purpose. “They wanted this building to be an irresistible force for gathering. Somewhere their staff would be excited to come in and work every day,” David says.

Cambria plays a role in that everyday experience. Throughout the building, White Cliff in a polished finish appears at key points of connection, including small café stations and meeting places throughout the building, the mail room, cafeteria condiment station, and second-floor concierge desk. These high-use areas support the movement, gathering, and interaction that define the workplace, bringing a refined yet durable surface to spaces employees encounter throughout the day.

A Hospitality Highlight

While SICK reflects Cambria’s role in a large-scale corporate environment, Ancoats’ hospitality work shows how the same qualities translate into more intimate settings. At Starling, a restaurant project for Jester Concepts, Cambria is used in several applications: Blackbrook™ on the kitchen pass-through counter; Swanbridge™ on the credenza, built-in hall cabinet, and restroom counter; and Newport® on the window sills.

For Ancoats, that versatility is part of Cambria’s strength. Whether in a workplace or hospitality setting, the product supports spaces where aesthetics, performance, and longevity all matter.

If the priority is a surface that you don’t have to worry about, looks amazing, is high quality, and is going to last, then Cambria is what you’re going to pick.

What’s Next

As Ancoats enters its next chapter, the team is actively working to create a development business within the firm, expanding its role beyond construction management and general contracting to taking on its own projects from the ground up. The company is also exploring opportunities to grow in additional strategic locations across the country. Still, the foundation remains consistent: a nimble team, a high level of expertise, and a focus on partnerships that grow over time.
