Black countertops are a standout choice in contemporary interior design, offering a blend of sophistication and versatility that can transform any kitchen or bathroom. Black countertops provide a dramatic backdrop that enhances the overall aesthetic, making a bold statement while complementing various design styles. From modern minimalism to classic elegance, black countertops are not just a trend but a timeless addition that brings depth, contrast, and a touch of luxury to your spaces. For more on black countertops, we connected with designer Morgan Moliter of construction2style who selected Cambria’s dark and dramatic Charlestown design for a recent project.

Cambria Style: What design style is best suited for black/dark countertops?

Morgan Molitor: Black or dark countertops are highly versatile and can complement several design styles effectively. They are best suited for modern and contemporary designs due to their sleek and sophisticated appearance. In a modern setting, black countertops create a clean and minimalist look that emphasizes simplicity and functionality.

However, they also work well in transitional designs, which blend traditional and contemporary elements. In such settings, dark countertops can provide a striking contrast to lighter cabinetry and fixtures, adding depth and interest to the space. In our opinion, black countertops can add a touch of elegance and modernity to the overall design.

CS: Did the homeowner for this project request black countertops?

MM: The homeowners were open to suggestions regarding their countertop color, however they also knew they wanted a dark vibe. During the selection process, we discussed various options and ultimately decided on black countertops for their ability to complement the overall dark and moody, yet modern vibe of the home. Dark features, whether it be countertops or cabinets or both, make the most sense in spaces where a dramatic, luxurious feel is desired.

CS: What made Cambria Charlestown the right choice for this project?

MM: This quartz design was chosen for its striking visual appeal and durability. Charlestown features bold veining that adds a dynamic element to the space, making it a focal point in the kitchen. We used Cambria Everleigh™ in the laundry room. Its softer, more subtle veining provides a balanced and elegant contrast, which was incorporated in the laundry/mudroom right off of the kitchen. These designs were ideal as they aligned perfectly with the homeowner’s vision of a modern, sophisticated kitchen with a touch of drama.

CS: When is best to choose either a veined or more solid black or dark countertop design?

MM: Choosing a black/dark design with veining, such as Cambria’s Charlestown, introduces a visually interesting and dynamic element to the space. The veining can create a sense of movement and add depth, making the countertops a statement piece. On the other hand, a more solid black design offers a sleek and minimalist look, providing a clean and unobtrusive surface that can seamlessly integrate with various design elements. The choice between veined and solid designs depends on the desired aesthetic impact and the overall design goals of the space.

CS: Talk about the cabinet selection in this project and what other cabinet colors/stains would you recommend for pairing with black/dark countertops?

MM: In this project, we went with a natural walnut. The rich, dark tones of the cabinets enhance the modern and moody aesthetic we aimed to achieve. Other cabinet colors or stains that pair well with black/dark countertops include:

  • Off white or beige cabinets for a classic, high-contrast look that feels clean and timeless—a monochromatic, sophisticated appearance.
  • Natural wood tones, such as oak or walnut, add warmth and a touch of modern charm.
  • Green, nature vibes, is also a great option. An olive green, such as dried thyme. This can create a different mood and style, from crisp and modern to warm and inviting.

CS: Talk about matte versus polished when selecting black/dark quartz countertops. What should people consider when deciding which finishes to choose?

MM: When selecting between matte and polished finishes for black/dark countertops, there are a few factors to consider:

  • Aesthetic Preference: Polished finishes offer a high-gloss, reflective surface that can make a space feel larger and more luxurious. Matte finishes, on the other hand, provide a more understated, contemporary look that is subtle and sophisticated.

  • Maintenance: Matte countertops can show fingerprints, smudges, and water spots more easily, requiring more frequent cleaning to maintain their appearance. Gloss finishes tend to hide these imperfections better, making them a more practical choice for busy households.

  • Design Harmony: Consider the overall style of the kitchen. A polished finish can enhance the elegance of a modern or transitional kitchen, while a matte finish might better suit a contemporary or higher-end kitchen. Polished can be more cost effective, but all in all it’s just a design preference.

CS: What about wall color, trim, etc. What are your recommendations when pairing with black/dark countertops?

MM: When pairing wall colors and trim with black/dark countertops, it’s essential to create a balanced and harmonious look. Here are some recommendations:

  • Wall Colors: Light, neutral shades like soft whites, light grays, or warm beige can create a beautiful contrast against dark countertops, making the space feel open and airy. For a bolder look, deep hues like navy or forest green can add a dramatic effect while still complementing the dark countertops.

  • Trim: Crisp white or light beige trim can provide a clean, defined edge that frames the space beautifully. For a more cohesive look, matching the trim color to the wall color can create a seamless appearance.

  • Accent Colors: Incorporate accent colors through décor, artwork, or small accessories to add personality and interest to the space. Metallic accents, such as brushed nickel or matte black, can also enhance the overall design.

CS: Talk about that fabulous ledge in this project.

MM: The ledge was designed for both functionality and style. It provides additional space for displaying decorative items or storing frequently used kitchen essentials within easy reach. The ledge also adds an architectural element to the kitchen, creating a visually appealing break in the continuous backsplash and contributing to the layered, sophisticated look of the space.

CS: Would you ever recommend a black/dark countertop for the island and something lighter for the perimeter? Or vice versa?

MM: Honestly, we used to recommend this but these days we find it a bit dated and patchy to us personally. However, this approach allows the island to stand out as a focal point, especially in larger kitchens where defining different zones can enhance functionality and aesthetics.

Pairing Cambria’s Charlestown on the island with a lighter design like Torquay™ or Swanbridge™ on the perimeter can provide a beautiful contrast, making the island the centerpiece of the kitchen. Conversely, using a light design on the island and dark countertops on the perimeter can ground the space and create a harmonious flow. However, in 2024 and 2025, this is a design element we wouldn’t fully recommend.

CS: Would you ever recommend a black/dark quartz wrapped range hood?

MM: The range hood in this project is not wrapped in quartz but rather features a custom design that complements the overall aesthetic of the kitchen. That said, wrapping a range hood in black/dark quartz can be an excellent choice for creating a seamless, integrated look that ties in with the countertops. It can also add a touch of luxury and sophistication to the kitchen.

However, it’s essential to consider the overall design and balance of the space. A quartz-wrapped range hood works best in kitchens with a minimalist or modern design, where continuity and clean lines are key elements.

CS: Any other design tips/insights that would be helpful when deciding on black/dark countertops?

MM: When deciding on black/dark countertops, consider the following tips:

  1. Lighting: Ensure adequate lighting in the kitchen to balance the dark surfaces. Natural light, under-cabinet lighting, and strategically placed fixtures can brighten the space and highlight the countertops.

  2. Complementary Elements: Pair dark countertops with lighter cabinetry, backsplashes, and wall colors to prevent the space from feeling too heavy or dark. Incorporating metallic accents can add a touch of glamour.

  3. Maintenance: Dark countertops can show dust and fingerprints more easily. Choose a finish that aligns with your lifestyle and maintenance preferences.

  4. Texture and Contrast: Incorporate different textures and materials to add depth and interest. For instance, combining matte and polished finishes or mixing natural wood elements with the dark countertops can create a balanced and visually appealing space.
