For Twyla Gurlea, founder of ColorView Design in Breckenridge, CO, design is as much a science as it is an art. Originally from Minnesota, Twyla lived in the Caribbean for many years before she and her husband, Doug, and their children, put down roots in Breckenridge nearly two decades ago.
Twyla initially worked as a color specialist, where she learned to analyze color using scientific principles and psychology. Then clients began asking her to handle entire projects. In 2017, she founded her full-service residential interior design firm to meet growing demand from clients seeking a more holistic approach.
Today, ColorView Design serves clients throughout Summit County, Telluride, Aspen, and beyond. She also often collaborates with her husband, managing partner of high-end home builder New West Partners, forming a strong design-build team.
A Science-Driven Approach to Color
For Twyla, color is more than a decorative element—it’s a communicator. She draws on color theory and the psychology of color to influence mood, energy, and harmony within a space.
“Color can create an emotion in us,” she says. “If a client wants a calm, mellow space, I’ll choose colors that lower energy. If they want a lively, dynamic feel, I’ll choose higher saturation or brighter tones. It’s about balance. And choosing the right Cambria design is a big part of that.”
Cambria natural quartz designs play a starring role in her process. Twyla often extracts tones from a design and carries them into cabinetry, walls, and finishes, creating a cohesive palette. “Cambria does an incredible job of balancing colors—from subtle greens to hints of brass or silver. I can either play them up or calm them down depending on the desired mood.”
The Cambria Connection
Growing up in Minnesota near Cambria’s headquarters, Twyla always was familiar with the quartz brand. But through her design work and trade shows she has become a dedicated advocate.
“Cambria is one of my first go-to products,” she says. “The quality, depth, and consistency are unmatched. If I had to choose one product to use for the rest of my career, it would be Cambria.”
Her local Cambria rep plays a key role in keeping her inspired and informed, providing timely updates, samples, and insights into new designs. “I can design an entire room around a single Cambria slab,” she says. “They make it easy to dream big.”
Her philosophy on color extends to her use of Cambria.
Two Homes Featuring Cambria Designs
119 Boulder Circle: This luxurious modern mountain home, created with New West Partners, honors Breckenridge’s rugged beauty with a mix of white oak, dry-stacked stone, and blackened steel. To complement it, Twyla added muted palettes, layered textures, and thoughtful lighting for warmth and softness, ideal for family living.
For the expansive kitchen countertops, Twyla selected Everleigh for its timeless movement and balanced tones. “With so many natural textures in play, the countertops needed to be cohesive but quietly commanding,” she explains. “Everleigh gave me beauty, durability, and soul.”

99 Boulder Circle: In this award-winning mountain retreat, also built with New West Partners, Twyla chose Delgatie™ for the primary bath’s dual vanity and backsplash. The design’s subtle white-on-white tones and warm cross-veining create quiet elegance, harmonizing with the home’s high-end finishes.
