Classic Colonial Gets an Interior Design Overhaul

A design team incorporates Cambria quartz surfaces into a home makeover that’s a canny hybrid of urbane glamour and country casual.

Beautiful, Durable, and Functional

Cambria quartz surfaces in a matte finish provide the classic look of honed marble but with greater durability for serious home cooks. Not only does this nonabsorbent, easy-to-clean quartz surface make perfect sense as a kitchen countertop and backsplash, it can be fabricated to create useful amenities like these sliding doors that conceal the walnut shelves of a hidden spice cabinet.

The organic movement in the veining of this quartz design is regal enough to pair with the large European-style range hood and mixed metal fixtures. It’s also calming and casual enough to complement the salvaged wooden beams and oak floorboards that were carefully curated for this home. All of the materials—from the Cambria quartz countertops to unupholstered dining chairs, to dirt-disguising patterned floor tile in the mudroom—were selected with a busy family in mind.

All in the Details

Black-painted windows were added throughout the home and a variegated paint color that appears to shift with the light adds depth to the walls. Recessed canned lighting was shunned in favor of more decorative options. The designer says if you’re trying to make a house look amazing and you have young children, this is an easy way to do it because the lights are fixed and unlikely to be damaged by kids. So, even though the pendant light selected for the great room initially seemed too large, the proportions perfectly suit the space and negate the need for any table lamps that could get knocked over by playful children. More Cambria quartz surfaces top the counter space in the bathroom and mudroom, maximizing the beauty and durability quotient throughout all high-traffic areas.
