In 2019, after more than a decade in interior design, architecture, and construction, Franco Rivera founded his full-service design firm in New York City. Today, Franco Rivera Design is renowned for its minimalist modern aesthetic, crafting sleek urban lofts, refined city apartments, and bespoke vacation homes for clients across the country. His meticulous attention to detail ensures each space balances effortless living with understated elegance.
The Cambria Connection: Personal and Professional
Franco began specifying Cambria quartz surfaces within his firm’s first year. “One of the first things we loved was that Cambria is American made,” he says. “Then we learned about the company’s ethos and saw how its values aligned with our own. They stand by what they say about their brand. And importantly, they’re a wonderful group of people. From the start, I’ve wanted to work with partners I genuinely like.”
Making Work and Life Easier
Franco appreciates how Cambria simplifies the design process for both his team and his clients. “Our rep keeps us up to date with new design samples, which ensures we have the latest innovations,” he says. “And Cambria sends samples quickly. Their responsiveness is crucial. They understand the need for quick decisions to keep projects on schedule.”
A Multi-Surface Marvel
Durability is a key reason Franco specifies Cambria. “I’m always looking for materials that will look good long term, as good as the day you installed them. Cambria never etches or stains—it stays pristine. And with all its benefits, it offers exceptional value.”
The nonporous, antimicrobial properties of quartz were especially appreciated by clients in the early years of Franco’s business, which coincided with the Covid pandemic, and remain so today. “Of course, countertops are a priority, but clients also love using Cambria for floors, shower walls, and other surfaces.”
Quartz Design Favorites
Franco’s creative use of Cambria quartz surfaces extends beyond countertops. He has applied it to walls, backsplashes, fireplace surrounds—and even designed custom bathroom trays using Cambria’s Inverness Bronze™ design.
“I’m drawn to designs that look cut out of the ground, and Cambria does that so well,” Franco shares. Ella™, with its dove-gray lattice on a marbled background, and Ironsbridge, with patterns reminiscent of sand dunes in warm and cool tones, are among his favorites. He also values their availability in multiple finishes and thicknesses.
While his signature style leads him to soothing palettes, he finds Cambria’s bolder designs to be elegant options for clients who want to make a statement. One example: When a client requested a standout master bath, he selected Cambria’s Bentley®, covering the walls in the bold black and white design.
Fine Finishes and Thoughtful Applications
Franco appreciates Cambria’s range of finishes, from polished to satin to matte, for the way they enhance a room’s tactile and visual experience. “Each project’s DNA will dictate the choice,” he explains. “It evolves throughout the design process based on the home’s existing elements and the client’s preferences—for instance, whether they lean toward polished metallics or more subdued finishes.”

Envisioning the Future for Homeowners
Looking ahead, Franco is excited to take on more vacation home projects—spaces dedicated to relaxation, where design plays a key role in restoration. “These are places where clients can be more adventurous with their style, free from the constraints of everyday practicality.”
However, he also believes primary residences can embody this sense of sanctuary. “Clients often say their homes must be practical, so we prioritize storage and functionality. But we also find ways to incorporate elements that enhance well-being.” His own experiences inform this philosophy, as he finds balance by escaping from New York City life to his Pennsylvania country house and historic home in Puerto Rico.
Thoughts for New Designers
For aspiring designers, Franco emphasizes versatility and flexibility. “You’ll wear many hats. It’s not just about design; you’re also a business manager. Some days, design might be just 5 percent of your role, with communication taking up 95 percent. In the end, you need to deliver—keeping clients happy, growing your business, and building your future.”
