For over three decades, Walcott Adams Verneuille Architects has played an active role in shaping the community of Fairhope, AL, a historic Gulf Coast town that the firm has long called home. Founded by architect Mac Walcott, and later expanded through the addition of his wife, Gina Walcott, along with partners Clay Adams and Lea Verneuille, the studio evolved from an architecture-focused practice into a fully integrated architecture and interior design firm. Today, their team of 20 professionals works across a thoughtful mix of residential and commercial projects, from custom homes to healthcare facilities that contribute to the town’s evolving architectural fabric and extend throughout the Gulf Coast region, including Mississippi and Northern Florida.

A Timeless Approach

Principal architect Ryan Baker has been with the firm for more than 24 years and plays a key role in guiding projects from initial concept through completion. Each project is approached with an emphasis on how a space will be lived in, not just how it will look. Rather than adhering to a single aesthetic, the team designs with client needs and longevity in mind, creating architecture that feels timeless rather than trendy. “Our goal is to make homes that still feel as beautiful 20 years from now as they are today,” Ryan says.

Where Architecture Meets Design

With interiors integrated into the firm’s process, designers are often involved from the earliest stages so architectural and interior decisions inform one another from the start. Designer Sam McGinnis plays a key role in this approach, guiding client discovery and translating lifestyle needs into cohesive interior environments. “Interior design goes beyond beautiful pieces. It’s about understanding how a space will be built and how it will function for the people who live there,” Sam says.

Working across a range of styles, from traditional to coastal to contemporary, the interiors team is known for thoughtfully blending influences, refining details, and merging ideas to create designs that feel personal and balanced.

Blending Southern Charm with Cape Cod Character

A standout example of this approach is a custom home where Southern tradition meets East Coast influence. Designed for a husband and wife—one from Alabama and the other from Massachusetts—the residence blends the best elements of both styles into a cohesive whole.

Arched doorways and subtle gray shingles reference East Coast influences, while the home’s form and layout draw from the warmth of traditional Southern design. In the kitchen, Ironsbridge in Cambria Matte® finish was selected for the countertops, island, and range backsplash. The finish was specifically chosen to enhance the lighting in the space without causing a glare on the surfaces.

Cambria Connection: Rooted in Regional Tradition

For Walcott Adams Verneuille Architects, Cambria has long been a trusted material, specified across both residential and commercial projects. Along the Gulf Coast, durability and maintenance-free performance are key considerations—but clients are equally influenced by the traditions and character of the region they call home.

Cambria designs such as Delgatie™, Brittanicca Warm™, and Ironsbridge are often compared to Alabama White marble, a regionally beloved stone valued for its warmth and traditional Southern character. These designs, however, offer the durability and maintenance-free ease that natural stone cannot.

A residential kitchen project showcases this sensibility, featuring a Brittanicca Warm slab that clads an antique-style island, echoing the Southern character deeply rooted throughout the region.

Many clients come in looking for Alabama White marble, but they don’t want the upkeep. With Cambria, we can give them something that feels familiar, is still made in the USA, and performs well long term.

Commercial Design with Impact

Commercial projects make up a meaningful portion of the firm’s portfolio, where performance and durability are essential—but design remains equally important. At Cardiology Associates, a healthcare facility designed to feel both professional and welcoming, Cambria was used throughout the space, most notably at the reception desk, where Ironsbridge creates a refined focal point. “Commercial projects like this one give us the chance to create wow-factor design moments—things like oversized reception desks or full walls that aren’t as common in residential work—while still using a material like Cambria that will perform well in high-traffic environments,” says Sam.

Designed to Endure

Looking ahead, Walcott Adams Verneuille Architects plans to continue building on the foundation that has carried the firm forward for nearly 40 years. By maintaining an integrated approach to architecture and interiors and prioritizing livability and long-term performance, the team remains committed to creating spaces that are deeply connected to their clients and their community.
