Gatta Homes in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, is known for its elevated approach to homebuilding. Features that other builders consider “upgrades” are just par-for-the-course for her firm, says lead designer Syrina Gatta, who routinely works detailed millwork, stone surfaces like Cambria, and convenience-rich spaces into her designs. Take, for example, the laundry room—part of a home showcased in Cambria Style. The design stands out for its elegant style, but it’s also full of thoughtful details that make a routine task easier and more enjoyable. Here, Gatta shares her tips for creating a laundry space that’s as beautiful as it is practical.

Add a Spacious Sink

“Many of our clients want to use the laundry room for a lot more than doing laundry, whether that’s a hobby or caring for pets,” says Gatta. Including a deep sink makes it easy to clean anything from hand-washables to paint brushes to the family dog. “I prefer Silgranit sinks instead of stainless steel,” she adds. “They don’t scratch as easily.” And add a sprayer to your faucet selection for easy cleanup.

Select Countertops Carefully

First, plan for as much open counter space as possible, so you’ll have plenty of room to fold clothes or work on projects. Again, opt for a material that’s as hardworking as it is good-looking, like the rich Cambria Blackbrook™ design Gatta chose for the laundry room shown in Cambria Style.

Keep It Looking Great

Try not to combine the laundry room with a mudroom, if possible. “When they’re one space, you see piles of laundry as soon as you enter the house—or stumble over dirty boots while you’re trying to get the wash done,” says Gatta. When it comes to style, don’t limit yourself to “strictly utilitarian.” Of course, durability is key, but “have fun with color, patterns, finishes,” says Gatta. “Treat your laundry room like a powder room—a chance to make a bold statement with style.”
