This month's issue contains information relevant to 'green' kitchen and bath design, a special offer exclusively for you as a Design Trends subscriber, and an invitation to share your kitchen or bathroom remodel story. Again, thank you for your interest in Design Trends and "Welcome Home" to the Cambria family.
One of the fastest growing trends in kitchen and bath design is incorporating environmentally friendly or 'green' products and appliances. Eco-friendly building and remodeling is not only beneficial to the environment, but also to your health and well-being. Many 'green' products improve indoor air quality and reduce the threat of harmful molds and toxins. If you're considering a remodel or building a new home and want to incorporate design trends that are beautiful, safe and environmentally sound, consider the following tips for your kitchen or bath:
Appliances: If your appliances are more than 10 years old, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) suggests replacing them with energy-efficient models that bear the "Energy Star" logo. Energy Star-qualified appliances use 10%-50% less energy and water than standard models.
Cabinets: According to GreenBuilder.com, most conventional cabinets are made of plywood with interior grade glue, particle board, or medium density fiberboard, all of which outgas urea formaldehyde, which is harmful to indoor air quality. The use of solid wood, metal, or formaldehyde-free materials will lessen a potential indoor air quality problem.
Wood Flooring: When selecting material for your floors, look for local or reclaimed wood, specific to your region, which will require less shipping and transportation resources. Recycled wood from demolished buildings or reusing flooring, banisters, ceiling beams, etc. will also help maintain an eco-friendly lifestyle.
Paint: According to the EPA, conventional paints contain solvents, toxic metals and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can cause smog, ozone pollution and harm indoor air quality. Made by most major paint manufacturers today, low-VOC paints are more environmentally friendly and less likely to adversely affect indoor air quality.
Countertops: As the focal point of most kitchens and baths, countertop selection is crucial. A quality countertop has the potential to significantly increase the value of your home. Although countertops can be a greater financial investment than other kitchen or bath products, environmentally friendly options like Cambria aren't necessarily more expensive. With Cambria, homeowners need not sacrifice beauty for environmental conscientiousness because Cambria countertops are inherently 'green', require no maintenance with chemicals and won't off-gas and emit harmful chemicals into the air. Granite has been scientifically proven to off-gas radon, a cancer-causing natural radioactive gas that you can't see, smell or taste. Porous countertop material like granite and marble require frequent cleaning and maintenance with chemicals and topical treatments. Cambria requires no sealing, polishing or cleaning with harsh chemicals, simply wash with warm water.

A: 'Greening' your home doesn't have to require large financial investments or drastic lifestyle changes. Minor adjustments in behavior and product use throughout the home can add up to real benefits for the environment, not to mention your own health and well-being. For instance, turning off computers and other small electronics after use and at night, recycling, using energy-efficient light bulbs and post consumer recycled paper, reducing use of water and plastics, and being conscious of the temperature in your home are simple ways to reduce your carbon footprint and maintain an environmentally friendly lifestyle.
